Si les Drag Queen occupent le devant de la scène des cabarets, peu de gens connaissent les Drag King. Les Drag King se servent des codes de la masculinité pour déconstruire les stéréotypes de la féminité. Être Drag King, c’est une manière de provoquer, de faire réfléchir sur la notion d’identité sexuelle et de la construction sociale des genres.
C’est aussi et surtout une façon de combattre l’étroitesse d’esprit (avec humour).
A l’occasion d’une soirée spéciale organisée par l’association lesbienne LBTG sur les Drag King à Rouen, GAYVIKING s’est interrogé sur cette pratique encore confidentielle. Ateliers Drag King, documentaires et films permettent de découvrir les codes du genre. Nous en avons profité pour interviewer Chriss Lag, la réalisatrice du documentaire “Parole de King” sur cette représentation.
GAYVIKING : Comment pourrait-on définir les Drag King ?
Chriss Lag : Les Drag King sont des personnes (femmes, hommes ou autres selon leur autodétermination) qui jouent avec les codes de la masculinité, pour la déconstruire.
D’où vient ce phénomène des Drag King ?
Chriss Lag : Je dirais que les ancêtres des Drag King sont les artistes de cabaret de la fin du 19 ème qui en Angleterre, Etats Unis et France gagnaient leur vie en tant que “male impersonator”. Je pense que le mot Drag King est apparue dans les années 70. Mais les Drag King tel qu’on les connait maintenant sont nés début des années 80. Avec Diane Torr, une danseuse écossaise vivant à New York, qui la première a formalisé les ateliers Drag King et a continué, jusqu’à sa mort en 2017, à proposer des ateliers d’un week-end nommés « Man for a day ». Une grande partie des King que j’ai rencontrés sont passés par un atelier. Outre l’apprentissage et la découverte c’est le collectif qui est assez magique. Chaque atelier est différent car ce qui est partagé vient pour beaucoup des participant.e.s. Et il y aune chose importante maintenant grâce à internet où l’on peut aussi apprendre beaucoup de choses sur ce qu’est être un King et les techniques nécessaires même si on ne peut assister à un atelier.
Y’a t’il finalement un message féministe dans ce code ?
Chriss Lag : Le Drag King est un outil féministe par excellence. Il permet de s’approprier pendant quelques heures les codes du masculin. De s’approprier l’espace autour de soi, voir évoluer dans l’espace public avec tous les “privilèges” réservés habituellement au masculin. Expérimenter par son corps comment le masculin est construit socialement.
En France, ce code de genre semble assez rare, ou du moins, il ne se voit pas.. ?
Chriss Lag : Il y a beaucoup de King en France et de plus en plus. Dans mon film vous pouvez en découvrir 22 de différentes générations et de différentes villes de France.
Quel(le)s sont les Drag King les plus célèbres aujourd’hui ?
Chriss Lag : En France, je dirais Louis(e) de Ville qui est das mon film. En Angleterre Adam All.
Qu’essayez-vous de montrer au travers de ce documentaire ?
Chriss Lag : Je me suis intéressé au Drag Kings car même si c’est une pratique confidentielle, elle nous concerne tous dans les sujets qu’elle aborde. C’est ce qui bouleverse les spectateurs qui ont vue le film, il permet de tout à chacun de s’interroger sur ses rapports au féminin et au masculin. Et ce que j’aime en particulier, c’est qu’il permet de passer instantanément de la théorie à la pratique. En préparant le film, je me suis rendu compte qu’ils y a autant de trajectoires pour arriver au Drag King qu’il n’y a de King. Et j’ai rencontré des personnes extraordinaires. Je n’ai plus qu’une envie… qu’un maximum de monde les découvre.
